Entry 1_Phan Thi Lanh

Entry 1

Item 1: Cartoon
Rhetorical devices:
  •  Metonymy:  big sphere - China; small spheres - the countries which China wants to sway ; bracket - Chinese ambition
Message: China is raising an ambition to turn the countries and groups of regional economic intergration into its via satellite.

Item 2: Fable
The elephant rope

A man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reasons they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attemp to get away. “Well”, trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller, we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free”.
The man was amazed. These animals could at anytime break free from their bonds but they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.

Rhetorical devices:
  • Metaphor: the elephants (people who believe that they cannot do something because they failed at it once before) ; the rope ( the trial which people have to get over)
  • Contrast: the huge elephants >< the small ropes
Message: How many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before.

Item 3: Poem

Yesterday is history
by Emily Dickinson

Yesterday is History
Tis so far away
Yesterday is Poetry
Tis Philosophy

Yesterday is Mystery
Where it is Today
While we shrewdly speculate
Flutter both away.

Rhetorical devices:
  • Rhyme: History- Poetry- Philosophy- Mystery; away- today
  • Metaphor: Yesterday - the time which is flown away; History, Philosophy, Poetry, Mystery – the fine things belong to the past
Message: The time flown away is always fine and plays an important role in life.

  1. Item 2 is the good story. Failure is the important part of our life, do not give up when you fail in the first time.

  2. i think the message in the second item is:
When people do not have any confidence to do something because of their previous failures and never notice their raise in maturity levels, they will never succeed and be forced to live like elephant's life. Failures play an important role in learning so we should never give up the struggle in life.
