Identifying Bias
ITEM 1: Pond's Flawless White - 7 days to love
- Type of bias: Stereotype
- Analysis: When watching this ad, we slowly come to the realization that the theme is : "If your epidermis isn't white enough, the man of your dreams will never love you."Therefore, the ad gives a stereotype of women: a beautiful woman is a woman who has white skin.
ITEm 2:
The famous Chinese actress Lu Liping has sparked a micro blog war after she posted several anti-homosexual messages to her 125,000 followers on Weibo.
In one micro blog she cited Romans 1:26-27: "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error."
In another entry, she reprinted a priest's micro blog commenting on the legalization of gay marriage in New York New York is the sixth and also the largest state in the US
Type of bias : discrimination
Analysis: Nobody has the right to call gay people criminals and ask them to be 'corrected'. Lu Liping showed her prejudice in action when called homosexuality a crime loathed by God on her blog.

- Type of bias: prjudice
- Analysis: This ad is considered as one of the most racist commercials in recent history. Volkswagon features an Arabian terrorist in its ad campaign for the new Polo automobile. The terrorist attempts to be a suicide bomber at the scene of a busy restaurant, but his plan is thwarted because the Polo, despite being small, is just too strong for his bomb.This ad used a prejudice when considering Arabian as terrorists.

Hi there. I think that in your item 2, there's a discrimination. It's not just her thought that homosexuality is bad. " I will keep preaching: homosexuality is a crime" - her thought has become action. That's what i think :)
ReplyDeletei think in your item 3, a bias here is prejudice, not scapegoating. because i think the terrorist attempting to be suicide bomber is an Arab not another person in a country. additionally, he appeared in the surroundings which are white people at the animated restaurants--> prejudice: Arab people are thought to be terrorists and they are also the root of terrorism!
ReplyDeleteI think in item 1, the menifestation of stereotype is not that a beautiful woman is a woman who has white skin. The white skin is one of the reason for the man come back into love with the girl. In fact, his new girl friend are worse than the old one in her character ( she forced him to buy her more expensive ring, beat him,...)
