- Prejudice
- Analysis: The boss said to two women:" You're both so qualified, so I've decided, this only fair way to choose a new secretary-whoever can grab this banana first". Looking at the picture, you can find that the women standing front will grab this banana because she is taller than the another and she will be chosen a new secretary. Although the boss ask them to do that to be fair, it's extremely unfair because the shorter women can't grab this banana first. His words show clear prejudice about height, which makes the shorter women feel to be insulted.

 Item1:

Type of Bias:Stereotype.
This picture shows the stereotype of women. “I’m a women so I MUST know how to COOK”. Women is considered as the wife and  the mother in her family. She is obviously responsible for household chores, including cooking. As a result, the women MUST know cooking well. However, not many women can cook in reality because they are too busy with their jobs or they are so lazy to cook by themselves. In some cases, they leave this work to their husbands.

Item 2:

- Type of Bias:Discrimination
-Analysis:
The lady( the old staff  underestimates  the new staff ( the girl). In her opinion, she can’t get promoted so fast. She may be too confident. Because  she herself works  for a long time but hasn’t yet been promoted. Perhaps, she doesn’t believe in her real talent. However, there are some people with excellent skill can achieve the success soon albeit their young age. Furthermore, experiences or age can’t decide everything.

Item 3:

L

Bias type: Prejudice
Analysis : This is about the prejudice on homosexual people. This man in white is holding a board with a women picture to cover his man’s face. This man is not too confident to show his real face because of the prejudice on homosexual people.

Item 1: Tran Lan Anh

Stereotypes:
 Americans: Do as they say.
 Japenese: Be slow to promise and be quick to perform
 Chinese: The shortest answer is doing the thing. Ernest Hemingway
 Vietnamese: It’s one thing to promise and another to perform.
 Stereotypes make us ignore differences between individuals within each group; these things might not be true.

Item 2:
Lack of money is the root of all evil.
George Bernard Shaw
Irish dramatist & socialist (1856 - 1950)
Scapegoating:
- Blamed money= source of all evil.
Other causes: lack of love or political issues. Many people are shortage of money, but they have great integrity and honesty.
“Lack of money is one of the roots of evil” is more appropriate.

Item 3:

The man is walking around and guzzling a beer in only underwear and a pair of sneakers. He looks like another child in a family.

Stereotypes:
Men: immature, irresponsible, messy.
Women: warm, caring, mature.

Identifying Bias
ITEM 1:  Pond's Flawless White - 7 days to love

- Type of bias: Stereotype
- Analysis:  When watching this ad, we slowly come to the realization that the theme is : "If your epidermis isn't white enough, the man of your dreams will never love you."Therefore, the ad gives a stereotype of women: a beautiful woman is a woman who has white skin.

 ITEm 2:

The famous Chinese actress Lu Liping has sparked a micro blog war after she posted several anti-homosexual messages to her 125,000 followers on Weibo.
In one micro blog she cited Romans 1:26-27: "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error."
In another entry, she reprinted a priest's micro blog commenting on the legalization of gay marriage in New York. The priest wrote: "So far New York is the sixth and also the largest state in the US to legalize gay marriage. God, please forgive this ever-degenerating place! Even if anti-homosexuality becomes illegal some day, I will keep preaching: homosexuality is a crime. God loves people; hates crimes! Believe in Jesus and conquer the crime!"

Type of bias : discrimination
Analysis: Nobody has the right to call gay people criminals and ask them to be 'corrected'. Lu Liping showed her prejudice in action when called homosexuality a crime loathed by God on her blog.

ITEM 3:

-         Type of bias: prjudice
-         Analysis: This ad is considered as one of the most racist commercials in recent history. Volkswagon features an Arabian terrorist in its ad campaign for the new Polo automobile. The terrorist attempts to be a suicide bomber at the scene of a busy restaurant, but his plan is thwarted because the Polo, despite being small, is just too strong for his bomb. This ad used a prejudice when considering Arabian as terrorists.

Entry 3_HUY NGUYEN

Item 1

Scapegoating
Analysis: In the cartoon, we can see a car accident . High above in the sky, an old man whom is assumed to be God, using a remote control , looking down  and says :"Shit!". It seems that he has just made a fatal mistake. The funny cartoon humourosly blamed the car accident on God , who is believed to control the whole world & people's  fate, which also includes the car accident.

Item 2:

-Identifying bias : Discrimination
-Analysis:  Two little kids are praying to God for peace to everybody in the world.  However they also pray
that the Muslims and Jews would pay the price for their heresy. That's definitely religious discrimination which has rooted deeply  into the subconscious of many people who think that their religion is the best and consider other religions such as Muslims and Jews are heresies.

Item 3:

-Identifying bias :Prejudice
-Analysis: There're two people sitting in the car, a man and a woman. The man is driving the car. Both of them are wearing the seat-belts; however, the women is wearing an additional seat-belt crossing her mouth which makes her unable to speak. From the title above:" New seat-belt design: 45% less car accident" , viewers can infer that woman is blamed for causing accidents because they talk to much while being in the car and distract the driver from driving car. That's a prejudice and in fact it's not true at all.

ENTRY 3 _ PHAN TIẾN ĐẠT

ITEM1:

-         Racial discrimination
-         ANALYSIS: It’s very clear that this video has bias. Firstly, you can see 2 opposite person: one white policeman and one black man. Secondly, the police man says to the black man that: “ You are going to be arrested……..because you are a black……black people steal.” . The black says that “ he wasn’t stealing anything. The police reply that “ just in case”.It means that all the black people are accused to be stealers. In fact, the numbers of stealers are not dependent on the race.=> racial discrimination

-         ITEM2:

-          Stereotype
-          ALNALYSIS: In the picture, there are a lot of characteristics of British that many people will think about when mentioning the British. These are stereotypes of British.
ITEM3:

-          Scapegoating
-          ANALYSIS  :In the news, the language the author and Dr Pham Xuan Hai used are very emotive such as “tội đồ, kẻ, chiếm đất, thủ phạm..(culprit, land encroaching...). The purpose of using this kind of language is to totally accuse the motorcycle of causing traffic jam. However, in fact, there are a lot of reasons for traffic jam. They shouldn’t accuse the motorcycle as the only one reason.
ITEM4:
Cheapest is the dearest
-Prejudice
-ANALYSIS: It’s really a negative judgment that all the cheap things are very bad. Many cheap things are quite good in quality (or you can understand not all the cheapest are dearest). This conclusion is based on the opinion of some people, not based on knowledge of the facts.

IN ADDITION: ( A clip about racial discrimination in real life J )

Entry3_Vũ Thị Thùy Phương

Item 1:

  • Type of bias: Discrimination.
  • Analysis: The picture expressed the Sexual discrimination: Women in U.S were not entitled to  vote for the general election of National Association. Man always think that women is nomally dependent in them, and woman have no voice in any decision both in the family and society. Nowaday, although there still has the discrimination between male and female in some countries, the social position of the women are becoming more equal with men.
Item 2:

Silence is a wonderful jewel for a woman but she seldom wears it. (Danish Proverb)
  • Type of bias: Stereotype.
  • Analysis: Most of people think that women talk a lot. And if women keep silent, they would be more beautiful and lovely.
Item 3:

Chúc các bạn an toàn!
Nguyễn Thanh Vân.
  • Type of bias: prejudice
  • Analysis: In this news, the author Thanh Van Nguyen had many negative judgments when she talked about traffic polices. She assumed that it was the traffic polices that caused the death of young man who didn't wear the helmet while riding motobike on the road. However, the truth is the polices did nothing wrong; they just did their duties. The young man died because of riding too fast and not paying attention to the road, not because of the polices' action.
