Entry1

 Item1: Cartoon (1)

  • Overstatement: There are so much cars that those cars were arranged closely like each of grain on a corn
  • Metonymy: A lot of cars- result of industrialization
Each of car like a grain of corn- no space on the road
       Message:
Lots of cars were produced every year while the road system is not improved to meet human need.  That causes the traffic jam.
Item2: Poem

Life Is A Gift (2)
Today before you think of saying an unkind word–
think of someone who can’t speak
.
Before you complain about the taste of your food–
think of someone who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife–
think of someone who is crying out to God for a companion.

Today before you complain about life–
think of someone who went too early to heaven.

Before you complain about your children–
think of someone who desires children but they’re barren.

Before you argue about your dirty house, someone didn’t clean or sweep–
think of the people who are living in the streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive–
think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job–
think of the unemployed, the disabled and those who wished they had your job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another–
remember that not one of us are without sin and we all answer to one maker.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down–
put a smile on your face and thank God you’re alive and still around.
Life is a gift – Live it, Enjoy it, Celebrate it, and Fulfill it.

Rhetorical devices:
  • Parallelism: Before + clause
                            think of ..................
Message:
Life is a gift. Therefore, we should value the life. We should value and satisfy with  what we have. We should think positively about our life.
Item3: The story

The elephant rope (3)

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
Rhetorical devices:
  • Metaphor: the elephants- the human beings
the rope- the obstacles, the challenges in life
Message:
Like the elephants,  many of us have a belief that we cannot do something  because we failed at it once before.
Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

  1. the item 3 shows me that habit makes us become passive

  2. in the item 2, I think the author also use antithesis and metonymy as rhetorical devices.
for example: saying an unkind word (can speak) and can't speak
taste of your food (have food to eat) and has nothing to eat.
    .......

  3. Item 1 is really interesting. It reminds me about traffic jam that we face everyday.

  5. Hi, I have some things to share about your entry.
In item 1, I really like this picture. It's familiar to us enough to detect its meanings. It's real creation. In addition, about the message, I think it should be 'the cars brought into use every year' but not the cars 'produced'.
In item 2, I love this poem. Thank you for posting it. I only want to add a rhetorical device which is rhyme (wife- life; heaven- children- barren; streets- feet; job- job; another- maker; down- around).
In item 3, in my opinion, the rope should be understood as the prejudices that are shaped since we were young. They are somehow gradually carved into our mind, which prevents us from 'escaping' from ourselves to make DIFFERENCES. And i think the lesson is that we should look at oursleves regularly to find out whether there is 'an invisible rope' around that is preventing us from exceeding limitation to succeed.

  6. For the item 2, I really like the last line: "Life is a gift – Live it, Enjoy it, Celebrate it, and Fulfill it" It's somehow very meaningful to me!
However, in my opinion, the item 2 also has another rhetorical which is Repetition: Before+ clause
    Think of...
